Wrong result declared 'under pressure'
CHANDIGARH: The Panjab University's examination branch got the result of the BEd correspondence course wrong, jeopardising the future of hundreds of students. The explanation for the mistake: results are always prepared "under pressure and in great hurry."
The result for the academic session 2003-04 was declared out of a maximum 490 marks instead of 470.
1x1 polls
The maximum marks had been reduced as one of the practical papers had been changed from 50 marks to 30 after revision of syllabus.
People compiling the result got confused as some of the examiners had given the awards out of 50 whereas the others had given them out of 30 marks.
But rather than referring to the syllabus the examination branch officials calculated the marks proportionately after discussing the matter with the controller of examinations and declared the result.

The report of an enquiry conducted into the matter by DN Jahur will be put before the syndicate on Saturday. The report points out that the persons responsible for the mistake neither consulted the syllabus nor took formal orders of the COE for the declaration.
When the responsible persons were asked about it, they responded that the declaration of results was always done under pressure and in great hurry.
Not the only case

In another blunder committed by the controller of examinations' office, the answer-sheets of a cancelled exam were evaluated and the result was declared, causing harassment to students of MSc II mathematics.
On the basis of an enquiry conducted in this case, the VC has issued warnings to the assistant registrar secrecy, superintendent secrecy branch, ASO secrecy branch, senior assistant re-evaluation branch, superintendent conduct branch and three clerks.
The mathematics paper of MSc II when first conducted was reported out of syllabus and was then held again. But the students were not satisfied with the marks given and even those that came after re-evaluation.
Finally, when the answer-sheets were taken out to resolve the issue it was found that the result had been declared on the basis of the answer-sheets of the cancelled paper and re-evaluation had also been done of the same.
